Yesterday I met a cabbie, this guy was from Jordon. On my way to new apartment, I decided to take a cab, because my suitcase was just to heavy to carry or drag or I am not strong enough, anyway. This guy from Jordon told me the reality, it wasnt something new, but no one ever told me like this. I see loads of migrants over here, people from all over asia and europe come here with a hope of better future. They love the clean roads and above all Brand Australia. Citizenship of a first world country is like working in a company which in number one in the sector. In my eyes, first world country is different in only one aspect than the third world countries, the powerful currncy, if you want to earn same amount you earn here, in India you have to work 50 times more, not all can take this hard work and they opt for the smooth life, which consists of less population, less traffic, less noise and more comfort.

Going back to the cabbie, he is not happy with the country,because a standerd apartment is out of reach of him, it costs around 600000 bucks. And he has no doubt that even if he works whole life he wont be able to own an apartment.

I wonder about human thinking and psychology, we are never satisfied, probably wont be satisfied with anything ever, unknowingly we lose control of out mind and keep on appending out wishlist with new and better items. Take example of this guy, he is a citizen of Australia now, his future is secured in terms of health care and all, he earns enough to rent a home and eat. If you compare his health, I am sure it is far far better than the Indian taxi drivers. But he is upset with Australian government. And he demands cheap apartments for all 22 million Australian in such a big land which produces more food than it consumes.

Well, life is a journey of betterment, so do not blame anyone, its our basic instinct to want more, dream bigger and appending our wishlist with bigger and better material satisfactions, but, I think sometimes we should stop, take a deep breath and think about those people, who are actually living a life of an animal, we often call them less fortunate, but a matter of fact, I think we dont want them to grow stronger intellectually, because, if they become like us in terms of knowledge they will amend thier destiny, and we will be challenged and forced to live without support from working class people. Just think, if everyone becomes rich and retires early who will work as driver or at super market or who will do the end of contract cleaning? I am not going deep to India, we know it all how an Indian still lives on $2.

I went for a hair cut today, after almost 6 months, I finally decided to clean the bushland which I decided to grow as the last time it costed me $17, so this time I opted for a cheaper place. I would like to start with saying that, I am a big fan of work out and the result of it, a great health, and trust me or not, it a great health gives you a great confidence too. But, one thing I have realised that what is luxury in one country can be a necessity in some other country. Well, I am not talking about any home appliance here, I am talking about BODY FAT, to be specific, keeping away the body FAT.

I am working out or rather chasing 6/8 pack abs for last 9 years ( will complete 9 years on coming may) and I know it very well what people of India think about work out. Any way, all my life I have done just one thing, I tried to grab the opportunities I came across and eventually I landed into a software service company.

As a matter of fact I joined the industry when the other part of the world, which is main driver of the financial facts of the world going through some real problems, that made me witness the offshore heat in It industry.

But, 1 thing I would like to say here, I am not being Narayan Murthy here, I am not giving any tips to these geeks, I am just trying to explain the situation.

Communication in office means setting the expectation correct, or managing the expectation, may be being in grass root, I do not have enough experience or intellect to comment on anyone's managerial skill, but I know one thing, if you are not adoptive, may be you are dinosaur, so you better watch out. May be the culture of working 12 – 16 hours came with some passionate people who started with some dreams during the budding days of the industry, but not it is lame try to impress others and a practise to follow others and if you do not have family or if no one is expecting you to be with him / her then this practise is beneficial for you, it will definitely pay you back as slices of pizzas or KFC chicken, or if you are lucky sizzlers, longer hours in the comfort of AC, ( I do not know if these go green initiatives are going to restrict the AC hours) and in medium to longer term you will get good bonus, timely promotion, so there is nothing wrong in it. I completed my 6th month in Sydney last 18th November. First time in my not so small life I came out of my country, left my family behind and spent 180 days without any family and friend. Not everything in life is sweet but I am always positive, after the darkest part of night sun comes up. that's an eternal truth too.

So, I want to quickly wrap up few of my experiences. The first mistake for me was to travel without a travel adaptor. After reaching here I realised that my Indian plugs are not meant to fit in Aussi plugs. So remember to travel with a travel adapter, wherever you are going, an universal adapter is must have.

The people coming to Australia can carry almost 23 ( check in) and 7 kgs in cabin luggage. When you arrive you need to declare what are the materials you are carrying. Since this was my first overseas travel, I needed to ask everyone ( possible) about what to carry and what not to carry. So here is your tip..

If you are coming to Australia, do not carry any lose food items, else the customs may quarantine in air port. So you can carry all types of packaged and sealed food items, nothing un sealed, like sweets and stuffs. While you are booking your tickets, you can ask the travel agent to request the air lines to give you some extra luggage allowance. Try not to carry more than that, as you may buy something here and you need to take all back, if you want to take more than you are allowed to, air lines may charge you a high rate.

Ok guys, here I am, your very own Sydney reporter,reporting directly from SYDNEY for channel unknown. Did I know that today is the Sydney city Marathon Day? Well the answer is a N + O = NO.

Today I decided to step out and hit the sidewalks and then the parks just to give my eyes a little break in the mornings and turn to the greens. So I did that. I started at 8 am and headed towards Opera house. But the very first sight made me bit curious, I saw the roads in front of apartment are shut down and no vehicles are there, and cops are watching you. Was not a funny sight, but I decided to go out and check out matter. When it is about my health, no one can stop me, and i was going for walk for health, so I was virtually unstoppable ( ).

Surprise surprise, all the major roads are shut and cops are everywhere in the centre of the city. But I continued to north, and there I got the root cause.

Today is Sydney City ?Marathon day. And guess what, 30000 people are running for 4 to 40 kms. well, I captured few moments, but I am yet to know the background of this run. Running is not unusual for the guys over here, I see them running everywhere on the sidewalks , on the trade mills all the time, morning to night, but I am really surprised to see even kids are running. I saw a area for the :Family Fun Run”. I saw a fat couple trying hard to keep with the fit guys, but hard luck this year, I hope these guys will try harder this whole year to reduce those extra layers and next year they will beat other fit couples.

Two more remarkable scenes I could have taken with camera, but unlucky me. Well, not having a snap cannot stop me from telling you about that, I saw a guy on a special cycle, he looked very enthusiastic and was running and competing too, but was driving his ride with hands, yes, he does not have both of his legs, he was so fast that I couldn't even turn on my camera to capture his energy.

Then I witnessed a cute scene. a mom came running down to her kid who was with his dad, and asked “ give me a energy boost”, then I saw a high five between little kid and mom. Next scene: dad taking picture of leaving wife with DSLR.

That’s it , then I turned towards woolworths.

This initiative also includes 'water sensitive urban design' such as rain gardens and swales that will be built across the streetscapes, public domains and parks to slow down and filter storm water to prevent pollution.

Adanced Waste Treatment aims to reduce greenhouse gas and landfill by treating non-recyclable waste and turning it into energy. It involves a local treatment facility where the waste is turned into gas that can produce low carbon electricity. There is no incineration and no pollution as only heat and moisture are released during the process. The residual material is safe to be crushed and used for construction. Similar Advanced Waste Treatment facilities are common across Europe.

Automated Waste Collection is a computerised system which includes chutes under rubbish bins which are connected to a network of pipes underground that vacuum waste to a central collection facility. This can be applied to houses, apartment blocks and bins on the street. The advantage would be fewer garbage trucks, cleaner streets, less noise and less traffic on the roads. I am not very sure if I am in best position to write a review of Lebera mobile in Sydney, NSW, Australia or not. But I want to share my experience. I changed from Optus to Lebara, to make free calls to India, well those calls were not exactly free calls, but free calls with star mark on them, a flag fall was applied that point of time, it was 25c. So you connect to any Indian landline / Mobile number, you talk or not, you have to pay that flagfall charge, then onwards you do not need to pay anything. So, of course it was cheaper option to call India.

The network coverage was not bad, you are not very likely to miss those towers from mobile, you may not find 5 bars all the time, but you will see few amond them all the time around the SYdney city.

Well, to call India, my experience was not good. You may experience call drops, each new call cost you the flag fall charge. Call quality was pathetic most of the time, you may hear echo and noise, and delayed voice.

To add with this, they have increased the flagfall charge to 29c and they are charging 2c per minute when you are calling India.

But 1 thing was better in Lebara, you could have seen the number calling you from India, unlike Lyca, where you see UNKNOWN.

Well, to add with all these, you can buy LEbara SIM from any 7 Eleven stores around the city for $2 else you can simply visit their web site and order a free SIM to your postal address. I am not sure if it comes to you, I have ordered one and waiting for it, will keep you guys posted if I get that.

Probably I will start writing about friday. It was special day. Not because we the people staying in New south Wales had long weekend ahead, because 13th of june, it is public holiday to celebrate queens birthday, the weather gave use no reason to become happy. It was cloudy and when I was returning from office, it was raining. Because of the shades on the footpaths, I was not drenched.

I was back home, chatting with friends in computer, suddenly got a call from my TL, he asked if I am free to work this weekend. There are 2 meanings of this call,

no one is willing to work this weekend, otherwise they would not have gone for the least experienced person of the project

2nd, I know something by now about the project.

I agreed to work, one observation, back in India, it was taken for granted that you have come over weekends, but here, I got my TL thanking me 1000 times for coming and asking for apologies 1000 times for asking me to come. Anyway, I felt good to get some sought of importance. Whenever you enter the project, if it is getting over soon and if you are the last member joining the project get ready to have hard time to get highlighted.

At 8.30pm my TL asked me to go to office. I was bit scared to go out, it was friday, you will find all the pubs full. Well I went out, and trust me, you do not need to get panic, all these pubs arrange security to control situations, but you may see people getting drunk and making noise on the streets, try to avoid the bunch for your own safety. Well another point, I got a invitation from my roommate to go to movie with them, and this shows my progress in my apartment as well.

It is a eventful week. Well, I am loving it or not loving it, that is not the matter of concern. The week dint start with a usual pink shirt. Yes, the pink shirt freak manager dint wear a pink himself. And he wasn’t very much acceptable among the pink crowd.

I am really frustrated with these disgusting roommates. 2 people 6 glasses and 4 plates. This stat shows how much indiscipline, unorganized and lazy these guys are. If you look at the kitchen, you will feel, thousands of people cook there, and it is like a public kitchen or something with no one to clean it. These guys look civilized but if you stay with them you will feel that they do not have civic sense. They do not clean the frying pan properly, other than that, I don’t want to mention anything. Well, so what am I doing ?? If they are so unbearable how am I staying with them?

Well that is mystery I am yet to solve. But I can tell you something, patience is a virtue, use it. Be positive and flexible, sometimes you cannot change the situation, but you can keep on trying to change it, and for time being, try to be like how the situation wants you to be. In my childhood, I came to know about a fact, why dinosaurs are not on earth any more and why cockroaches are still here. Dinos failed to act as per the environment or changed situation but cockroaches adjusted with it and still they are bugging us with their presence on earth.

So, be intelligent, bad times comes for time being, with patience you can overcome it.

Sunday to Wednesday–the change

This is almost end of Wednesday. Last blog I posted was on last Saturday. Many things have already changed massively inside this apartment. And I am still struggling to accept the recent changes.

Sunday started with a lazy tune. In the evening I went out with my apartment mate to explore the city, well, we were trying to head towards Sydney opera house, unfortunately enough after walking for 1 hour with the map, we managed to reach Captain Cook harbour. But then only something was going change. My apartment mate was going to be my room mate soon. He got a call, someone was waiting for us in the apartment. I also received call from my first Indian buddy in Sydney that 2 people are actually waiting for us in our Apartment. I realised something very bad was going to happen to me.

I reached home, 2 unknown faces were waiting for us. I saw a happy face, the other one was busy with his phone. Well, both of them got introduced to us. i came to us, ne of them will live with us and the other was there to accompany him. I got a shock. To be honest I was not happy at all, after all, first time in life I was in a position where I had no other way out but to share my room with someone whom I do not know at all. I was mute, but there were thousands of noise signals going by in my mind, I was shut because I was angry, angry with my helpless situation. I was disgusted. I am not here to save money. There are few things in my life, I do not want to change. Most important among them, I do not want to change myself, and sharing a room with someone means you have to modify yourself at least a bit, as per the changed environment, and it was very obvious that, when you get someone in your room, you cannot live like you want to. And to be honest today on Wednesday , I am literally disgusted with the people I am living with. As a matter of fact, I do not have any way out otherwise I would not have lived here anymore. But, I have seen one thing, if you hate doing something in your life, some force will enforce you to do that. And here I am, after so many days of waiting and after putting all those effort when I finally I reached the final step of fulfilling of dream of seeing all continents, I have this problem with me. I am very much comfortable with the people of this country in office and those whom i meet everyday, but I am most uncomfortable with these guys, who are actually southern part of my own country. I know i sound like a racist. But I am not a racist, I am a keen observer, and some time when you become too much critical, you find so many fault in the people around you that you start hating them. That is exactly what is happening with me.

This guys do not know how to use a microwave, they do not know if there is a third person who does not understand their language then it is a manner to use some common language, and there are thousands more which I do not want to write here, life becomes difficult with people who are actually not like you, not with habits and choice. I wish to get a way out of this hell soon and I am very sure I will get one soon. I think, life has 3 parts, 1 is good, 2nd is bad and 3rd part is ugly. I try to make the ugly part bad and the bad part good. This was the flow gets maintain, life keeps rolling. Cheers!!!!

The morning was very boring. It was 10.30 am I was waiting for my roommate to wake up. Well, he was too busy sleeping and dint seem to be in a mood to leave his bed anytime soon. So I decided to start the day alone. It was in my to do list for a quite while now, I had to buy few winter wears. And this time very much unlike the Pink Shirt I bought last Saturday, I did bit research and asked few local people that where can I get them for cheap with assured quality. All of them suggested supermarkets like Target or Kmart. None of these stores are actually in Sydney, you need to go to suburbs. So, I was all set to check out the Sydney suburbs.

The next research I did, I tried to find out which one is closer, the store of Target or the Kmart. I found out that I have a Kmart within 1 km from where I am living and the Target store is bit far away, it is around 2.5 kms from my apartment. So, I dropped the idea of going to Target at the first place. Then I checked the catalogue of Kmart to know what kind of winter ware they actually sell, I was delighted that the price and styles were pretty much good, and you cannot get anything better with that price. Well, I checked prices in eBay.com.au to know or to get a idea about the apparels, I checked the price in Target which was recommended by most of the Aussis and then I compared them with the stuffs being sold in Kmart. By the way, both Target and Kmart are group companies of Wesfarmers, so they do not have much difference.

Now, it was the show time, I checked out the available roads, there were 3 or 4 ways, of course anyone will go through the short one. It was in a mall in Broadway, just outside Sydney. They had Coles at Level 1 and Kmart at level 2. and the stock was amazing. Price I think was reasonable for most of the things. I am not sure if they have enough check out counters, they have only 4, and since it was a Saturday morning, I guess that is why there not much rush. So, I got those Oz stuffs at last, I was supposed to get last week only, but now I think it was a good decision not to buy them then, since I got more time to do research and but some good stuffs.

It is a very good Saturday morning here in Sydney. There are 2 reasons behind making this morning to be a very good one. Well first of all it is Saturday so people can sleep as much as they want and the next reason which is equally important to me that is the Sun. From yesterday, we have some sun after almost 2 weeks. So, Sun is shining and a perfect weather for weekend.

I am just searching words or better I say topics to write about, ok, I have one, why don’t I share few important points you should remember when you are in Sydney.

When you are in Sydney, you will get many City Convenience stores on all across the city, even these stores are quite big enough but these are nothing but like the grocery shops we have in our neighbourhood. But if you go to Woolworths or Coles these are few supermarkets to name, there are many more like Kmart and Target they sell things cheaper than these Convenience stores.

If you are living somewhere around Sussex street or Kents street, you have one outlet of Woolworths down in Georges Street. So be there buy those .

But, if you are living near South Sydney, I would suggest you to go to Paddy’s market which is cheapest one and sells very fresh stuffs too. But I am not sure if you would get the packaged stuffs there, for those stuffs you have Coles or Woolworths in the city. Target and Kmart are part of the Wesfarmers which is a big name here in Australia, like we have Reliance. And I work for a group company of Wesfarmers.

While you are shopping, do not go for the cheap items, because most of them are will be reaching their expiry date soon, that is why the price is low. Here in Australia, they have only 7 days or 15 days time period to eat things. Well, this is not applicable for all and everything, but of course for something. So whenever you buy check for the Best Before date and do not look at the price.

If you are buying meat, egg, milk, cereals or anything like that you will see a tag on every item, Made In Australia / Pure Australian Beef / 100% Australian Chicken / 100% Australian Egg. After reading these I felt like these OZ guys are really obsessed about Oz stuffs. Well, I was watching news on TV one day when I saw this news, it was about the bananas. This year Australia faced a devastating flood in Queensland, and the production of banana is affected which has hit the price high up to $12 – $14 per kg, yes, everything here is sold like that. So the news reporter was asking the guy who was some big controller of banana supply in Australia that if they are planning to import bananas, then I saw him strongly turning down the idea of importing, he showed strong confidence that supply will come soon and price will go down in December. I am not sure if it was some sought of Aussi spirit.

Another instance probably which shows Aussi spirit too. I am not sure if you can search in youtube to see the devastation happened in Queensland, I had a chance to see a few in the news, and then it is 5 months after the flood, what do you expect? Queensland still struggling to get back to life? Well, fact is it is already back in track, and need another such flood to derail the flow. And not the government, I watched few video footage where I saw that Oz guys were actually working to clean roads and places, they common men not from any NGO or any other organization. Think again, why I am saying this.

Smoking Tuesday

I came back hungry and late from office. Without having much options I put the last piece of chicken on the frying pan, with less oil. After few minutes, well the smoke reached the smoke detector, and the cracking sound really made me alert. Yeah, the chimney was on, yet, that could not stop the smokes to reach the detector. I opened the balcony and immediately removed the frying pan from oven, after few minutes the siren went back to sleep.

Lesson learnt: Use the small burner, keep it in sim and always open the balcony while you are cooking.

The hunt for Pink Shirt

Ok, was not a bad day for me, if I could forget I amount of money I spent. Saturday means the grocery day, but I had to hunt for sweaters and a pink shirt too. I went to Hays market, probably here you get thing bit cheap in Sydney, this market is mostly for Chinese and by Chinese. I got a pink shirt there, all pink, well, it was made of polyester so I decided to not to take it.

Let me tell you the background behind my chase of this shirt of my most hated colour. I truly believe pink is a colour for girls. But on the very beginning of this week, I was shocked to know that PM who is a middle aged guy and quite a gentle man, is fond of this girly colour, probably he thinks this colour to be his lucky one. And he wants every one in the team to wear pink on Mondays.

Before next Monday I had to get this pink shirt, and finally after searching the whole market city I got one for $89, it was a striped one with red and kind of pink.

and yes I bought a Vodafone usb modem with a 3g connection for internet. So now I am left with only one problem and the biggest one. the MONETARY problem.

Saturday was a day to hit the road again. This time we headed towards south Sydney where we have Paddy’s market or Hay’s Market. It is situated near the Central Station of Sydney. You will see a building named Market City, you walk forwards check the boards on the building, here you see the name Paddy’s Market. I am not sure why this building has 3 different names.Towards south Sydney mostly or you can say majority of the population are from China or korea. and let me tell you something this is the place where you get cheapest vegetables and cheapest stuffs. China symbolizes cheapest things all over the world. Cheers China.

There I bought a shirt, but suddenly this paddy's market may give you a feel that you are not in Australia but somewhere in China. Well, to be honest, in Kent Street where I live, all the shops around me are owned by Chinese or Koreans, and straight down the street you will get this Paddy’s market, not really within the city and it is bit different there. Tomorrow I have to leave this room, yep, it’s been one week in Sydney, and I have started knowing another city other than Kolkata, where I belong. So I was busy with packing and stuff. I walked into this room just last week with a curious and alert mind, when I knew nothing and no one here. I came here with few phone numbers and one address in Sydney; it was the address of the building where I am now. Here in Sydney you get agents for apartments and almost everything. And they will search anything. But always remember to check the property by yourself. You never know what you are going to get. But I do not think you can grab a basic property for less than $500 a week, so you need to cough out at least $2000. So life in Sydney is not going to cheap, it is not a cheap city either, you get a good life here for a good price. Today to make matter worse, it’s raining here, making the temperature around 9 – 10 degrees. So, I am hoping a dry morning tomorrow.

When you need to go to office, there can be hardly any scope for anything else. At least for me it is true. Out of my house, my most comfortable zone, I am becoming self-dependant man, with cooking, washing, drying well, even ironing the washed clothes. Today I went to Woolworths, while paying at counter, I actually met a Bengali, who is also from Kolkata, yep, and she was second one after I met the cab driver from airport to Somerset who was from Bangladesh. After many days I got a chance to speak in Bengali, that met me happy. Well, there is hardly anything exciting you can do without your friends and family, and when you are not in your land.

this was a day to chase people. I had to chase the apartment agent to get my burner fixed and I was not sure that if it was possible to lock the door from inside, the lock seemed to be broken. Well, I had to chase few people in office as well. So it was not a happy Friday, rather this Friday was a black Friday for me. Back in India, I needed at least 40000 bucks, and some one had mistakenly transferred my salary, as a result of that, it was not possible for me to get the salary there and I cannot get the salary here either, since I do not have a salary account here either.

First night @ new apartment

26th of may 2011, one week completed in Sydney and in this serviced apartment where i have been staying, today i had to shift from that to a new one since in Somerset the rent was too high, i had to pay $120 per night that is also in corporate rate. the new apartment i am shifting into is cheaper, it costs around $90 per night.

thank god the rain from yesterday night is no more there, and it is a moist morning, with help of my friend it was not a great trouble to get into the new apartment. well, at the first sight I did not get enough chance to look around it, but at the first sight I dint like it. Well I dumped my stuffs in a small room with two beds and had to rush to office.

it was a evening full of surprises when I came back from office. the very first thing I did, I checked each and every door, I found out, the room where I kept my stuff, was the small one with no window, so immediately I went to the other room, this was bigger in size with a big glass window and a wall mount lcd. so there was no better option than this. Well I got my room. But one thing I discovered, the room was not warm enough and cold air was coming from somewhere. So my experiment with the heater started.

It was dinner time and I wanted to fry an egg. I went to the burner, and again I was surprised to see that there was no knob to get the ignition from. So, I made toast and that was it.

This apartment does not have internet connection either, you have to pay separately to get that.

Well, after so many surprises it was my bed time.

5th Day in city was pretty much business as usual day for me, I do not remember me doing anything special today, it was a Monday, well all pink Monday. I came to know when I got into my first ever meeting with the manager and team. Then, with work it was not that hard, but at evening again I had to go to the super market across the corner. There I met a lady of 40+ may be, she looked like Bengali, I checked her name…yes, the name was Bengali too. On asking she confirmed that she is also from Kolkata. When you are out of Bengal, I guess, the thing you will miss most, is your own language, there is nothing like if you can speak it even when you are not in the place where you belong to.

The place where I live, it is at heart of Sydney. I got the place in a discounted rate since I booked it for 4 weeks, yet I am paying $120 per night. So, I guess I have to look for an cheaper option here, which will push me bit more far from office, and I have got an apartment for $90 a night. People in India may think, if you come to Sydney, you will be able to save a lot, I think they are not so right here. There was something special about this 4^th day in Sydney. It was a Sunday and I slept for almost 7 hours, when I left my bed it was more than 7 am. I was in no hurry. I dint have much to do today, since my clothes are not yet dirty, so no laundry, just wanted to see the city. After my 4 th day in city now I can claim that Sydney, or better you say the core Sydney is not that big as a city, since I live at the heart of the city and I walked for almost 30 minutes or so to reach Opera House, which is at another end. In my way to Opera house I saw the museum, art gallery, botanical garden and the parks. These are all places you should visit, if you are big fan of green then this botanical garden the flying foxes at the top of the trees will definite attract you. The parks are great places to be in when you are with your sweet heart, and if you want to get lost in her eyes, or after a hard day if you want to spend some time with yourself then get into the parks, there is hardly anyone to get into your privacy, other than those beautiful birds making some harsh sound all over.

I dint check the art gallery, but you can, if you like paintings and stuff, it does not charge you any fee to get into it. I liked opera house, but it is bit crowed probably because it was Sunday, when I was there, there was lot of tourists. But the sea around it has got something, well better I be specific here, it does have any wave, it is as still as any lake which does not connect with any river. Few speedboats and ships are the objects you will definitely find to be the background of the opera house. And if you hear some unusual sound, look up in the sky, yeah, there is helicopter service too, to see the city from sky, no idea about the cost.

Yea, half of my day was spent to see half of the city, I got really good memories here, hope I will get some more when I complete the city, with Sydney tower and see the kangaroos in the Sydney zoo.

My third day started at quarter past three. Well, I woke up connected the net, I had a chat with friends who is in US. Then called home, and finally 2nd part of sleeping process started. The process stopped at 6 or few minutes passed 6, I do not remember the exact time. At 9 me and my new friend was supposed to go to the super market for shopping. So we went to Woolworths, the local super market, 2 minutes walk from where I am staying, just across the street. There I bought only food stuffs, item and price will be detailed below.

So the all the foods are pre cooked, I need to defrost them and then I can eat, since I am a great Indian cook and do not want to show my talent over in Australia so I decided not to waste my talent and eat only ready to eat foods.

After this shopping I was almost broke and left with only $55 . We came back home, and my 3rd part of sleeping process initiated. With so much food, the lunch seemed to be interesting without any rice, dal, fish and other home made stuff. In evening, the phone in my room started ringing, well, my newest friend called me at his room. He is shy guy, sometimes I really fail to understand what he is trying to say. probably I need to use my radar for efficiently to read his signals. He gave me a treat, I was delighted, not with the food, but well, he is my 2 days old friend, not even 48 hours, and he prepared rice and dal mixed with vegetables, we ate it with some potato chips. I cannot eat in large quantities at a single time, so it dint change yesterday, some of his rice was still left, he told me to eat with yogurt, well I was really full, otherwise I never waste food.

After dinner, it was show time guys, we went out for a walk, and walked down the harbour bridge. Right at 8.35pm the show started, cracking fireworks, a 5minutes long show , managed to draw almost a thousand people round the lake. We got back to home at 9pm, the 3rd day was coming to an end, more over a Saturday was coming to an end.

First Night @ Sydney

Today is my second night @ Sydney, NSW, Australia. I am writing this post from 252 Sussex street, Somerset Darling Harbour, room # 307, fully serviced apartment. This city gave me a warm hug yesterday night. I landed here at 7pm local time, in Singapore Airlines, flight # SQ ###. In airport, I got my ortus sim for AUD $30, with this I can call India for 2.5c / PM and the local calls for 3.5c/pm. It thought it to be cheap when I saw it, but today, I came to know it is a premium brand and costly one, not for semi beggar like me .After getting out from airport, I got a cab, I was tired, I got into a cab, the driver was not white guy, he seemed to be Asian to me, but his accent sounded to be aussi. Well, I gave him the address and told him to take princes highway. But I am still not sure which way he actually took, anyway, the traffic was not that light, and it cost me $38 for a cab from Sydney air port to Somerset.
I entered the building, a tall white guy was there at reception desk. He welcomed me, I asked about my booking, after giving the confirmation number he gave me some form to fill up, and after such formalities and blocking the rent amount for 7 days in advance + $100 + taxes, he gave me the keys…ohh, not keys, smart cards, you insert those cards in the door and enter the room, then you insert the card in a holder just beside the door and you get your light turned on in room. so this was it, I was in Sydney and in an serviced apartment.

That night, I ate a ready to eat noodle and cookies, and then slept, well tried to, since I had to go to the office in the early morning, the next day. it was not a all sleep night for me, I was tensed and could hardly sleep properly, a new country, a whole new city, a new room and whole new life helped my heart to beat faster

My 2nd Day at Sydney

Here starts my second day in 'Sydney, well I arrived at the apartment at 9 pm Sydney time and I was tired since i did not sleep for more than a day by then, and i was feeling lonely and bit helpless too, this is not my home, and I know I have everything here, but was not sure how to operate them. problem started that very night when I went to have a shower and i was not sure how to get warm water out of it, so somehow i managed with the cold water ( thanks god, Sydney is not yet chilled, the minimum is going down to 8 or 9 degrees). The night was not really good, I did not get enough sleep, actually problem was a result of a call to my manager here. When I called him up after reaching here, he said to reach office by 8.30 am. And without having a tiny little idea about the city finding a place with help of a paper map …..was a scary idea to me, which took my sleep away, I am a man of my words, and I always want to remain the same, be it Sydney or Kolkata, so I decided that I will leave apartment at 7 am, and will start finding it, then one second thought I decided to start at 7.30, I live near to my office, it is just 10 minutes walking distance.

Morning was bit dark, at 6, I found it dark outside. As decided after having few cookies ( I brought them from India) I left my apartment at 7.30. I took my laptop and a bottle. By then I already got an idea that, Indian plugs are not supported by these aussi plug points, and I had to find the solution for it, and bottle to get water from the work place, I had no idea about the source of water here ( now I know, we get the water from kitchen sync ) .

Outside, it was chilly and windy, people were already out and on way to there workplace, well to be specific, many of them but not all of them. I started wondering with the map on streets, I had to find out 14 Martin place. After 15 – 20 minutes I was almost there as per the map, but could not see and board saying that this is Martin place. I was confused and standing on the road with map in my hand. People were passing by, a lady was also going with earphone plugged in her ears, suddenly she turned back to me and asked if I needed any help, I asked her for the Martin place, and yes with her help I got to my destination. I met yet another helpful Aussi .

I got into my office, I met someone working in same office in the elevator and he helped me to get into the office. I was supposed to meet my manager and then I had to move to another building, where I will be working. So it was just 8am, and office was almost empty, there were just 2 other guys over there other than me.

My manager dint turn up that day, he gave me a call and sent a guy to pick me up from martin place to my original work place. Here starts my journey in Sydney.

This guy arrives, on first look, HE LOOKS LIKE A TYPICAL GOOD BOY, yea I mean it. I was happy that, now I have a man with me who knows the direction, so I could fold that map and keep in my pocket.

In office, it was my first day, I dint have any idea about anything, so reported to someone, did some formalities and this guy introduced me to my project manager. It was 2.30 PM and I was expecting this day to be a easy one, but it was not.

My TL asks me to get into business on the very first day . Yeah, I love challenges, and I know one thing, The more you work, the more you learn, the more you learn, then more you rise. Here they do not use a communicator system, they have Skype, and me and my TL is buddies in Skype now. I got a nice guy sitting just beside me, in the next cubicle, he is born and brought in Australia, he is an Australian citizen but he is a GUJRATI. I met another helpful Aussi come Indian.

My day ends with going back to martin place and to meet some people and get some information come clarification about the confusion about money I had. And guess what, my manager buys me a grilled chicken burger and coke from Hungry Jacks. Well, yes, I got the adopter which can make your Indian plugs usable with Australian plug points, it costs $6.95 in any local store, I got mine just crossing the street of where I live.

By now, I know how to get warm / not so hot water in shower and how to control temperature in room, and I had to drink the TAP water .

I was yet to figure out how the chimney on the cooking gas oven actually works. Tomorrow is Saturday, the day to go to supermarket, Woolworths with the guy who is living in same building.
