Yes this is true, you can earn money online taking surveys. There are few sites which really pay to take online surveys. But among so many sites it is difficult to identify them, I personally feel that, because I had have experience of not getting paid or scam survey sites, which do not pay. But ciao is not like them, this site really pays, I am posting a screenshot too.
Problem is that, they only pay as Gift Cards, no other means like cash and all. They gives you Indiatimes Gift Cards. Once you reach 100rs, you can redeem it for one indiatimes GC. I got paid for 4 time, once I got paid, when they used to pay by paypal, it was a international site, after it moved to India, it is paying through Indiatimes GC.
