Text link ads was quite a popular method for earning money through web, till Google started penalizing text links without nofollow tag. So it is less popular now.
However, many web site owners are still using this method with or without nofollow tags. There is certain advantage of using this method of earning, this method is less intrusive and one may sell text links straight from his web sites.
